Songs by the Sea  - Matilda Sterby

After receiving the Birgit Nilsson Stipendium in 2024 - the same year she won the Wilhelm Stenhammar International Music Competition - Matilda Sterby’s operatic career has rapidly developed, both in Sweden and internationally. Within the framework of the festival theme “Sea”, we meet her, together with pianist Matti Hirvonen in songs by, among others, Schubert, Sibelius, and – naturally – Nystroem’s Songs by the Sea.

Matilda Sterby, soprano
has performed leading roles on Swedish and German-language opera stages – Gothenburg Opera, Malmö Opera, Volksoper Vienna, and in Karlsruhe and Hanover. Roles: Mimì, the Countess (Le Nozze di Figaro), Fiordiligi, Agathe and others. Soloist at the Birgit Nilsson Prize Award Ceremony 2025 and this summer she debuts as the Marschallin (Der Rosenkavalier) at Garsington Opera in England.

Matti Hirvonen, piano
is one of the Nordic region’s leading accompanists and an internationally active chamber musician. He has partnered with many of the world’s foremost singers and performed in major concert halls, including the Vienna Musikverein, Amsterdam Concertgebouw, and New York’s Carnegie Hall. Professor at the Norwegian Academy of Music and recipient of the Litteris et Artibus medal.
