British composer / conductor Sir George Benjamin, wrote two operas for Festival d’Aix-en-Provence. “Written on Skin” (2012) and “Picture a day like this” both made headlines following their premiere and continue to be staged around the world. The recent recording of the “Picture a day like this” received the 2025 Gramophone Award for Best Contemporary Album.
Writer Sofi Oksanen collaborated closely with composer Kaija Saariaho, creating the libretto for her final opera “Innocence”. Premiered at the 2021 Festival d’Aix-en-Provence to international acclaim, “Innocence” was a co-commission with the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Dutch National Opera, Finnish National Opera and San Francisco Opera. The opera was recently premiered in Adelaide and receives it New York, Metropolitan Opera premiere in 2026.
