From 6 – 12 August the Birgit Nilsson Days take place for the 6th consecutive year, opening with a public Master Class and closing with a large outdoor performance of “Tosca in Concert” at the Birgit Nilsson Museum. Puccini is also the theme of the museum’s new exhibition which opens on 27 June and is entitled “Puccini, Passion and Art“. Everything takes place in Birgit’s scenic home on the Bjäre Peninsula in southern Sweden.
“Tosca in Concert” features top international soloists – Joyce El-Khoury, Michael Fabiano and John Lundgren – in the leading roles. In addition, the well-respected opera singers Anton Ljungqvist, Fredrik Zetterström, Kjetil Støa, Anders Lorentzson and August Follin as well as the Helsingborg Symphony Orchestra and a large choir from the Bjäre Peninsula – all under the direction of maestro Pier Giorgio Morandi, one of the world’s leading experts in Italian opera.
Anne Sofie von Otter returns to the Birgit Nilsson Days to lead a Master Class in concert and lieder repertoire:
“It’s always fun to work intensively for several days on a course and to be close to the students from morning to evening for almost a week. Plus summer and sun and Bjäre and music all day long – a wonderful combination.”
Inspiring future generations of musicians was particularly close to Birgit Nilsson’s heart. Her legacy lives on today with the Stipendium for young singers, master classes for vocal students and the Birgit Nilsson Prize, which is awarded approximately every three years. The most recent recipient was cellist Yo-Yo Ma in 2022.
2023 marks 50 years since Birgit Nilsson awarded her first stipendium. This year’s recipient will be announced on 17 May, the singer’s birthday, which will be followed by a stipendium recital on 11 August in the church of Västra Karup – traditionally known as “Birgit’s church”.
