Birgit in the Italian repertoire – Rivals, roles and spotlight
Participants: Göran Gademan theatre scholar, dramaturg, casting coordinator at the Gothenburg Opera. The conversation is led by Anelia Kadieva Jonsson.
Birgit Nilsson left an unforgettable mark on the international opera world. In this conversation, we follow her journey through the Italian repertoire - from Aida to Turandot - and the roles that defined her stage persona. But she was not alone in the spotlight. (Unlike in the German repertoire, where Nilsson largely reigned without competitors, she faced strong rivals in the Italian sphere.) We explore her greatest contemporaries - rivals and colleagues - and ask: what made Birgit so unique?
A conversation, with audio examples, about voice, career and charisma in the golden era of opera.
