She receives SEK 200 000 which, thanks to an anonymous donor, has recently doubled in value, making it one of Sweden&#8217;s largest scholarships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Johanna Wallroth was thrust into the limelight in 2019 when she took First Prize in the prestigious Mirjam Helin International Singing Competition with her&nbsp;<em>&#8221;immediately engaging, intelligent and detailed performance&#8221;<\/em>&nbsp;(Bachtrack). She subsequently joined the Opernstudio of the Wiener Staatsoper from the start of the 20\/21 season where she has perfomed Giannetta (<em>L\u2019elisir d\u2019amore<\/em>), A Voice from Heaven (<em>Don Carlos<\/em>) and Barbarina (<em>Le Nozze di Figaro<\/em>) in a livestream performance under Philippe Jordan. Johanna is currently in rehearsal for a new production of Monteverdi\u2019s&nbsp;<em>La Coronazione di Poppea<\/em>, scheduled to premiere on 22 May.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to her upcoming commitments to the Wiener Staatsoper for the 21\/22 season (still to be announced) Johanna will perform this summer at a gala concert with the Drottingholm Baroque Orchestra, with the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra under Daniel Harding and makes her debut with Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France under Barbara Hannigan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Originally trained at the Royal Swedish Ballet School, Wallroth shifted her principle focus to voice, going on to graduate from Vienna\u2019s Universit\u00e4t f\u00fcr Musik und darstellende Kunst (MDW).\u00a0She made her operatic debut in\u00a02013, as Barbarina (<em>Le Nozze di Figaro<\/em>) under Arnold \u00d6stman at Ulriksdal\u00a0Palace Theatre, Stockholm and subsequently appearing as Eurydice (<em>Orfeo ed Eurydice<\/em>) at\u00a0MDW\u00a0Wien, Despina (<em>Cos\u00ec fan tutte<\/em>) at Vienna\u2019s Schlosstheater Sch\u00f6nbrunn and Pamina (<em>Die Zauberfl\u00f6te<\/em>) at Moscow\u2019s Gnesin Academy.\u00a0Johanna has since returned to Schlosstheater Sch\u00f6nbrunn as both Gretel (<em>H\u00e4nsel und Gretel<\/em>) and Susanna (<em>Le Nozze di Figaro<\/em>), portrayed the role of Ismene in Telemann\u2019s\u00a0<em>Orpheus<\/em>\u00a0at Vadstena Castle and performed the roles of Sandm\u00e4nnchen and Taum\u00e4nnchen (<em>H\u00e4nsel und Gretel<\/em>) in a\u00a0new production for Norrlandsoperan, Ume\u00e5.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last season, Johanna Wallroth joined\u00a0Sakari Oramo\u00a0at Helsinki Music Centre in Mahler\u2019s Symphony No.4, gave solo recitals with pianists Magnus Svensson in Stockholm\u2019s Konserthuset and Berwaldhallen, and Kristian Attila at the Savonlinna Festival and made her role debut as Zerlina in a\u00a0live-streamed semi-staged performance of\u00a0<em>Don Giovanni<\/em>\u00a0with the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra under Music Director, Daniel Harding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For more information visit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.birgitnilssondagarna.se\/bn-stipendium-eng\/\">birgitnilssondagarna.se<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This year\u2019s recipient of the Birgit Nilsson Stipendium is Soprano Johanna Wallroth.
