She is a frequent guest at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, La Scala in Milan, Wiener Staatsoper, Opera Bastille in Paris and the Royal Opera Houses in London and Stockholm, to name just a few. As a dramatic soprano, Nina Stemme has continued the great tradition of Kirsten Flagstad and Birgit Nilsson. She has been celebrated for her roles as Wagner\u2019s Isolde, Br\u00fcnnhilde and Kundry; Strauss\u2019 Salome and Elektra; as well as Puccini\u2019s Turandot and Fanciulla. Having received many international awards over the years, Nina Stemme was recognized as the 2018 Birgit Nilsson Prize recipient for her interpretations of the dramatic soprano repertoire with her respect for the composer\u2019s intentions, her tireless dedication to the dramatic soprano repertoire, and for being a great Wagnerian soprano of today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Biography<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>For years, Swedish born Nina Stemme has been considered a leading singer of the most challenging parts in major dramas: Isolde, Br\u00fcnnhilde and Kundry, Salome and Elektra, Fanciulla and Turandot. That she initially shied away from these staggering heights of the soprano repertoire is a noteworthy \u2013 if not the defining \u2013 characteristic of her career. Mozart\u2019s Cherubino is a far cry from Isolde and Turandot, a leap only few have mastered. Nina Stemme made the leap successfully by taking the time that a development of this kind requires. When she was offered the part of Isolde to be performed at the 2003 Glyndebourne Festival, she already had fourteen years of on-stage experience, having first taken lyrical parts such as Cherubino, Pamina, the \u201cFigaro\u201d Countess, Agathe and Eva, before moving on to increasingly lyrical-dramatic roles such as Mimi, Butterfly, Manon Lescaut, Tosca \u201cTannh\u00e4user\u201d Elisabeth, Marschallin and Senta. Isolde would have been the next step, but it was not until she had conferred with Birgit Nilsson that she took the offer. To her surprise, the legendary Wagner singer offered to help her learn her part. Nonetheless, Nina Stemme felt she was not yet ready to sing Isolde. When she did take the stage as Isolde for the first time at Glyndeborne, her performance was met with enthusiasm and she subsequently made a record with Pl\u00e1cido Domingo singing as Tristan and Antonio Pappano as conductor. Even then, she remained cautious: \u201cYou are never ready with these gigantic roles\u201d, she said in retrospect in her interview with the \u201cNew York Times\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Respect for the roles and the operas, flexibility, diversity and a level-headed estimation of her voice\u2019s potential \u2013 these were the factors that, alongside her voice itself, talent and musicality, made this highly talented singer an artist of global stature. In 1993, she was rewarded when she won Pl\u00e1cido Domingo\u2019s Operalia competition. Whether at the Metropolitan Opera New York, La Scala Milan, the Bayreuth Festival, the Vienna State Opera or the Royal Opera House in London \u2013 Nina Stemme has furthered the great tradition of Flagstad and Nilsson at leading opera houses. Her special status as a singer of \u201cextreme\u201d roles is also reflected in her list of audio and video recordings. Alongside the \u201cTristan\u201d recording conducted by Pappano, Nina Stemme\u2019s performance of Isolde has also been documented in the form of a live recording from Berlin under Mark Janowski as well as a television recording of her Glyndebourne performance by Nikolaus Lehnhoff. Her rendition of \u201cWalk\u00fcre\u201d Br\u00fcnnhilde is available as an audio recording in St Petersburg under Valery Gergiev as well as a video recording of the La Scala production under Daniel Barenboim. The diversity and bandwidth of her repertoire is manifested in her interpretations of Zemlinsky\u2019s \u201cK\u00f6nig Kandaules\u201d, \u201cAida\u201d, \u201cJenufa\u201d, \u201cDer Rosenkavalier\u201d and \u201cLa Fanciulla del West\u201d. The 2018 summer festival season once again revolved around the operas of Richard Wagner: Nina Stemme performed Kundry in the Bavarian State Opera\u2019s staging of \u201cParsifal\u201d as well all three Br\u00fcnnhilde roles in the Munich Ring cycle, conducted by Kirill Petrenko.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Honors and rewards<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>It comes as no surprise that Nina Stemme has been lavished with awards: She has been appointed Swedish Court Singer and Austrian \u201cKammers\u00e4ngerin\u201d, was winner of Pl\u00e1cido Domingo\u2019s Operalia, received the \u201cPremio Abbiati\u201d critics\u2019 award (2010), the Laurence Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement in Opera (2010), the International Opera Award for the Best Female Singer (2013) and the Opera News Award (2013), to name but a few. The German specialist journal \u201cOpernwelt\u201d has crowned her Singer of the Year twice, in 2005 and 2012. It is clear to see how proud Sweden is of Nina Stemme, as is amply demonstrated by a generous list of honours in her native country, including the Birgit Nilsson scholarship, \u201cLitteris and Artibus\u201d Royal medal (2008), the Jussi Bj\u00f6rling Scholarship (2016), the city of Stockholm\u2019s Saint Eric medal (2017) and an honorary doctorate from the University of Lund, and the Musical Export Prize of Honour, awarded to her by the Swedish government in 2016.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/birgitnilsson.com\/prize\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/03\/Birgit-Nilsson-Prize-statue-683x1024.png\" alt=\"Birgit Nilsson Prize statue statyett\" class=\"wp-image-603\" width=\"342\" height=\"512\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Nina Stemme has been announced as the recipient of the 2018 Birgit Nilsson Prize Internationally famous Swedish-born soprano Nina Stemme is in great demand worldwide.
